This Brave Woman Said F*** You To Cancer In The Best Way

When Aniela McGuinness had to undergo a double mastectomy for breast cancer, she wanted to deal with it the best way she could, with humor and a middle finger to the disease that took her breasts.  Her photo series project “My Breast Choice” shows the world how she healed from her scars with laughter and said f*** you to cancer.

Actress Aniela McGuinness was 32 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.  She decided to feature in her own photo shoot called My Breast Choice. “Before removing my breasts I wanted photographic evidence of what they looked like, but I didn’t want mug shots like attempted murders.”

Before her double mastectomy Aniela posed as Rosie the Riveter as a way to show how she was going to confront cancer head on.

After the operation (which coincided with Halloween) she posed as the bride of Frankenstein, scars and all.  Scars are a natural part of the body’s healing process and Aniela wanted to celebrate them instead of hiding them.

Aniela said the reason behind her project was, “mainly, I needed something to focus on while I went through this, a place to release my creativity and feel useful and My Breast Choice gave me that.”

Aniela chose not to have a nipple reconstruction because she enjoyed the “jokes and freedom of not having them”.

The project helped other women to laugh and feel proud of themselves as chemo and operations took a toll on not only their bodies but their souls as well.

Aniela wanted to change the standard mastectomy photos that women would see. “No more Before and After photos. I wanted them to see the Evolution, the Life, and the HUMOR in this dark situation.” With the support of her family and doctors, she got to share with strangers all of the world, her heartache and how she got through it with creativity and laughter.
