10 On Screen Characters That You Didn’t Know Existed In Real Life!
1. Roy Lee “Rocky” Dennis from “Mask”
In the 1985 drama film “Mask” the character of Eric Stoltz was actually based off the life and death of Roy L “Rocky” Dennis was was a boy who suffered from craniodiaphyseal dysplasia which lead to cranial enlargement.
2. The “Dude” from “The Big Lebowski”
The directors, the Coen brothers, actually had a friend by the name of Jeff Dowd was was the inspiration behind the “Dude”.
3. Popeye the Sailorman
E.C. Segnar, the creator of this sailor based him off a local tough guy called Frank “Rocky” Fiegel. Fiegel not only looked just like Popeye, he shared a similar personality.
4. Edna Mode from “The Incredibles”
Edith Head is the name of the lady on the left, a legendary movie costume designer who was nominated for 35 academy awards during her lifetime. Edna mode was based off her.
5. Severus Snape from “Harry Potter”
JK Rowling actually got inspiration from her own chemistry teacher John Nettleship. He was, at first, not very happy with Rowling’s inclusion of his personality, but with time he accepted it, and even took pride in it at the end. He passed away in 2011.
6. Dirty Harry
The film actually mirrors the investigation of the Zodiac killings. David Toschi (the real chief investigator on the Zodiac killer case) inspired the entire Dirty Harry franchise.
7. Indiana Jones
Jones was actually inspired off multiple different real-life people. Professor Hiram Bingham III is probably the person who has the closest connection with Jones. Hiram taught at Yale University. He was also the man who re-discovered Machu Piccu, and was the foundation for the character of Harry Steele in the 1954 Film “Secret of the Incas”. It should be noted that Indiana Jones was primarily based off Steele’s character.
He was actually based off the real-life “Mexican Robin Hood”, a man by the name of “Joaquin Murrieta”. He was a gold miner whose family got attacked, when nothing was done about it, Murrieta decided to take things into his own hands. He created a gang, which robbed and committed murders. But he was eventually caught and killed in 1853 by the Texas Rangers.
9. Norman Bates from “Psycho”
Search up Ed Gein, and you will quickly see the similarities between the character and this real life murderer from the 1950’s. Bates, in the movie is devoted to pleasing his mother just like Gein. This was just one of the many similarities Gein shares with Bates and many other famous on screen killers.
