Xbox 720? Playstation 4?

There has been a lot of, lets say, unconfirmed stories floating around on the web about the next generation of consoles.
First question – Do we need new consoles? Answer – Hell yes!

Lets be honest, This generation of consoles have gone well past their sell by date. Don’t get me wrong, they can still produce good graphics, taking Crysis 2 for an example, but times have moved on and new powerful hardware is now available.

I also keep reading that developers are complaining that consoles are restricting them to what they can produce. PC gamers might even say they are holding them back as well. This may be true (the restricting part of course!) Don’t want to be annoying console gamers now do we? :D
As stated before, new hardware is available and think that next year would be a good time to be releasing the next console.

Now with E3 just gone, Halo 4 was announced for next year… which means the possibility of a new console in 2012 is very unlikely. Well for Microsoft anyway.
The reported date of the next console is 2013 but yet again this is not confirmed. You would hope, we’ll I certainly do anyway, that E3 2012 will hold a massive importance which hopefully they announce the next generation of consoles. They say the world is going to end then? So why can’t the current consoles? Hmm not the best link but you get my drift.

Hopefully 2012 will be an exciting year for gaming and lets hope we all get that announcement we so desperately want to hear!

I also think the PS4 & “720″ will not make it’s debue until late 2012. The release will not happen until at least 2013, or start of 2014.

You mentioned PC gamers are being held back. If you haven’t noticed, PC gamers are being left behind. PC release date for games are later, certain games don’t come out for the PC at all, and there are less PC gamers in all honesty. It’s sad, because I love using the PC for gaming.

anyway, with the world economy going to crumble before it gets better, i don’t think Sony and Microsoft want to takes a risk in this economy. When the world economy hopefully recovers in a few years, then maybe we will see a new generation. I would sure like to see what they are going to do with newer technology…

PC gamer’s are definitely being held back, if you do a quick google search you would find multiple arguments upon games which have been ‘dumbed down’ to compensate for the PS3′s and Xbox360′s old hardware. Levels in Crysis 2 were no where near as vast and open as the levels in the original Crysis, leaving less freedom of choice. Texture and object details had to be reduced as well, and even still there seemed to be texture pop-ins and AI problems on the consoles. Its not that the consoles have worse games, its just that they don’t have the grunt to handle bigger tasks, some games being released on PS3 have sub-hd resolutions. Looking back at the older Playstations, they all had around 6 year period before a successor was introduced, so I’d say the PS4 will be announced start of next year or around then

Unfortunately, PC Gamers had it coming (being left behind I mean) why would you develop for a platform that is absolutely rife with piracy?

I love PC gaming, but developers need to get paid for their work – which is why they design with consoles in mind, where piracy rate is around 20% or so (compared to the 60% for PC users)

    • Ben says:

I think the piracy rates for consoles could be even smaller than 20%. After all Sony and Microsoft have the ability to ban you from their entire service if they catch you with pirated games, which deters most people from stealing them. Whereas the ability to stop PC gamers using the internet for multiplayer games is only in its infancy at the moment.
