iCloud: What is it?

iCloud is the latest breakthrough from Apple. iCloud stores your content and pushes it to all your devices. This means if you take a photo on your iPhone 4S, it will automatically be pushed to your other Apple devices via Wi-Fi and 3G. iCloud is completely free and “it just works”.

Keeping music synced within multiple devices can be frustrating. Now, you can download a song on your Mac or PC and it will automatically be pushed to your iPod Touch, iPad or iPhone through the cloud. The same applies for TV shows, download it from your iPhone and watch it from via your Apple TV. Also, you can now go to the “Purchased” tab in the iTunes Store and download any music and videos you have previously purchased at no extra cost. This makes it easy when purchasing a new device.

A new “Photo Stream” tab has been added to the photos app. This tab will act as a unified location for all photos you take on any iOS device. Take a photo on your iPhone and it will automatically be sent to iCloud and then pushed to all devices including Apple TV.

Documents will also work in the cloud. For example, If you create new document using pages on your iPad and save it, the document will be sent and stored onto iCloud. From here, iCloud will automatically push this document to other iOS devices such as the iPhone. Any changes made to the document from one device will appear on all other devices. This means you can pick up where you left off from any device without being troubled with syncing.

The same applies for Books and Apps. Read a book on any of your iOS devices and pick up exactly where you left off on any other iOS device (that supports the Books App). For many users Apps in the Cloud will be the best part of this new feature. Downloads of apps on any iOS device can be accessed across all iOS devices you own. Also, just like the iTunes Store, you will be able to hit the purchased apps tab and re-download any apps for no extra charge on any iOS device.

Other apps that support iCloud:

  • Contacts: Change numbers, email addresses etc. in your contacts list on one device and it will be applied to all your devices.
  • Calenders
  • Mail – Ad-free me.com mail account will push your mail to all devices.
  • Find My iPhone – Easily locate all your iOS devices from any location
  • Find My Friends (Click here to read our in-depth preview of this app)

iCloud will come with:
